Cutler, Bears, stun Packers, 17-13
Cutler, who was 1-11 against the Packers as Chicago’s quarterback, led the Bears to a big upset of first-place Green Bay, 17-13 at rainy Lambeau Field.
It’s clear Rodgers is not in sync with his receivers. Add in a stiff-looking James Jones and replacement-level tight end Richard Rogers and it becomes clear that even the best in the world need great tools – or at least functional tools – to work their wonders.
Coach Mike McCarthy said it was a disappointing loss.
However, tides turned in the second quarter as the Bear’s tied the game after a Zach Miller 3-yard touchdown reception. With first and goal, and time dwindling, the Packers failed to convert on four-straight plays, including a last play that allowed Rodgers to scramble and give his recievers a chance to catch the game-winning pass; a play that consequently foiled the Packer’s Thanksgiving feast.
Rodgers, who has hit on his left elbow on a third-quarter sack and said he played the rest of the game with numbness in his left hand, continued to scramble out of the pocket in order to find an open receiver.
“You’re coming in feeling like a homecoming game with them doing the extra things with Brett Favre and whatnot, but our mindset was to come in and win”, Porter said. He was 19 of 31. What John Fox and his entire staff has done in Chicago – from Fangio and Adam Gase, to Dowell Loggains, Stan Drayton, Ed Donatell and more – is nothing short of spectacular.
Green Bay had won six of its previous seven at Lambeau in the series.
It wasn’t the result the Packers wanted on the field, losing to the Bears 17-13 in a exciting contest, but there was true excitement at halftime as well. He was scheduled to have his name and retired No. 4 unveiled on the facade at Lambeau Stadium at halftime of the Bears-Packers game Thursday night.
“You look across that locker room, you see a lot of guys fighting for each other”, Cutler said.
“They’re all so hard to get”, Fox said. Chicago moves to 5-6 on the year and the Packers fall to 7-4.
The Green Bay Packers honored Brett Favre on Thursday, but Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears’ defense ruined the celebration.
The Packers, who ended the first half with a 22-yard Mason Crosby field goal, appeared ready to regain the lead on their first drive of the third quarter. “I got more of a thrill out of that than what I was here for”.
“Make no bones about it, if you don’t hold onto the football, turn the football over, your opportunities are going to decrease or go away”, McCarthy said. “They’re just going to trust us to get it done up front”.
For the Bears, Jeremy Langford had 48 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
Matt Forte also returned from injury, but gained only 44 yards on the night. It happened because the Bears are a better team than a roster, a better defense than their parts.
So “yeah, it’s huge”, Cutler said Thursday. It was his fourth INT-free game in 10 this season after five all last season. A 23-yard catch-and-run by Cobb was the key play.
– Lacy’s 29-yard run on the opening drive of the game was his longest of the season. He finished the game with one tackle and four passes defensed – a terrific ratio for a cornerback. Rookie CB Damarious Randall (knee) and RT Bryan Bulaga (ankle) left the game for the Packers….
