Grey Cup: It’s all about the ball
The Redblacks are, without question, the story of the year in the Canadian Football League.
The 40-year-old former Temple star received 71 of 75 first-place votes from the Football Reporters of Canada.
Previously, quarterback Mike Reilly pointed out that Edmonton had the best defence in the league “yet we don’t have guys who are up for defensive player of the year and we don’t have all 12 guys on the all-star team and that type of stuff because they play well as a group”.
I talked with Eskimos kicker Sean Whyte about touching or not touching the Cup, we also talked about the possibility of a late game winning field goal.
Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was the other finalist.
While the Edmonton Eskimos and head coach Chris Jones, a defensive guru, have occupied most of the defensive spotlight going into Sunday’s Grey Cup, the Redblacks have their own defensive chops. The native of Ottawa has two tackles and one sack this season.
“I always tell people I’ve never really worked”.
Burris, the East nominee for the CFL’s outstanding player award, finished 17-of-32 passing for 326 yards and the TD while running six times for 29 yards and a touchdown. “It would’ve been great to win the award, just being my first year in the CFL, but no bitterness from me”.
Like he did all season for the B.C. Lions, Adam Bighill hit his target Thursday. The five-foot-seven 153-pound dynamo was third overall in all-purpose yards (2,073) and punt return yards (930) and became the first CFL player to return a missed convert for a score. “Last but not least, I want to thank my teammates”.
“We couldn’t be happier to partner with Post and help kids start every morning ready to learn and give their all at school, at practice, and in the game – just like their favourite players on the front of the box”, CFL Commissioner, Jeffrey Orridge said.
During his 10 seasons on the sidelines in Winnipeg, the Bombers were champions of the Western Conference six time and drank champagne from Earl Grey’s Cup four times. “I was learning the system because it’s clearly different than American football”.
