Taking part in the debate on commitment to India’s constitution, Kharge said Prime Minister Modi should effectively intervene to stop his ministers from making controversial remarks. In a tribute to B.R. Ambedkar, widely regarded as the architect of the Indian constitution, the parliament will hold a special sitting on Thursday and Friday.
In the resolution that was adopted unanimously, while the House vowed “to protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country and the democratic, socialist and secular character”. “The misuse of the word should come to an end, as it has been the source of much tension and misinterpretation”, he said.
The Home Minister said it was hard to maintain social harmony because of the “rampant misuse” of the word secularism.
Putting all doubts to rest and silencing critics, Modi said that highlighting the importance of November 26 in way undermines the importance of January 26, our Republic day.
Continuing on his “Parliament has many voices” streak, Modi further stressed upon how India is plural and how the government has a sole religion – that of “India first”. He never said how he was being ignored and insulted.
The Congress leader said it would have been great if the government had remembered all those who were also part of the formation of the Constitution. “This country belongs to all of us…Please don’t repeatedly taunt people who have chosen India and rejected Pakistan”, she said.
Underlining an all-embracing character of the Constitution, the Prime Minster said the charter had the power to bind people with the diverse cultures in the country.
Rajnath while initiating the discussion had also quoted Ambedkar saying that though the Constitution was robust, the need was to have people of character, integrity and ability to implement it. He didn’t refer directly to the issue of “intolerance”, instead speaking of how the Constitution had the strength to bind a diverse country as India.
Grinning broadly, she asserted that it was the Congress that recognised Ambedkar’s “unique talent and capability”, remarks that drew a smile from Modi, who sat throughout the day-long discussion.
