Julian Edelman has broken foot in win
Edelman was diagnosed with a broken foot during the 27-26 win against the New York Giants that improved the Patriots’ record to 9-0.
Wide receiver Danny Amendola stepped up and had a season-high 10 catches for 79 yards and a 72-yard punt return Sunday.
The win left the Patriots with a four-game lead over the Bills and Jets in the AFC East. The Giants, who have a bye coming up, lead the NFC East by a half game over Philadelphia and Washington.
Stephen Gostkowski kicks the game-winning field goal against the Giants.
That first-down call is the one that could be second-guessed-even if the Patriots were playing the run, there’s value in getting stuffed, getting to the two-minute warning, and forcing New England to burn its last timeout on second down. But we even saw how he benefitted in that last game once Edelman went out.
As with most games that are decided by one point, there are many plays that you can point to that the Giants could have made and they would have been the ones to emerge victorious.
On Sunday at MetLife Stadium, things looked to follow the same script. The Giants drove down the field on a 15-play, 86-yard drive that ate up 4:14 of clock and put the Giants up with less than two minutes to play. In five trips to the red zone during the game, Manning and the Giants’ offense only came away with one touchdown. “You just got to make the play itself”.
“I think they’re not as good as the beginning of the year and not as good as last year”, Vanderjagt said at the time, referring in the latter case to the Patriots’ Super Bowl-winning season in 2003.
“They just weren’t going to let us run”, said Manning, “They had goal-line personnel in and they weren’t going to let us run the ball in that situation”.
First it was Dion Lewis (7.5 targets per contest in his six full games) with a torn ACL. Brady always says he has to get better and after that game, he’s right.
– Danny Amendola gets a gold star. Julian Edelman was forced to play defensive back throughout the year and the Super Bowl. “We’ll need to find different ways to produce with the guys that are on the field”.
Manning threw an apparent 5-yard touchdown pass to Beckham.
Odell Beckham Jr. allowed Malcolm Butler to knock a touchdown pass out of his hands with 2:06, thinking he had completed a catch that would have given NY a 29-24 lead. And the two showed impressive competitive spirit and sportsmanship throughout. “I think he’s grown more and more comfortable in our system with the things we ask of him”. Giants center Weston Richburg injured his left leg and was helped from the field. “It’s kind of like being on a baseball team where everybody’s got a hit, and you can’t wait to get up there and get a hit, too”.
After the tough early play, Butler was quite happy with his overall performance. As a matter of fact, many pundits already look at him as the best receiver in the team. “I just try and get in ultra-focus zone”.
