Two arrested at Black Lives Matter protest in Seattle
In a news release, St. Paul Police Federation president David Titus said he was “highly disappointed” with a November 15 resolution of support put out by Local 3800, as well as the presence of the union’s members at protests outside the Fourth Precinct police station in north Minneapolis.
The witness added that two of the three men had been taunting protesters before firing on them.
The protesters chanted as they filled the streets carrying signs that said, “Black Lives Matter”, “Don’t Shoot PDX” and “skin color is not reasonable suspicion”.
The shooting elevated tensions and brought the Minneapolis protests renewed national attention.
Grimm says organizers have a large Thanksgiving meal planned for Thursday. While some say Clark was handcuffed, an attorney for one of the officers has said Clark wasn’t handcuffed and had his hands on an officer’s gun when he was shot.
By 3 p.m., police said the protest, which was heading north on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Participants took time to pray for Clark and his family.
In a statement Monday, a Seattle Police Department spokesperson said the department “supports the rights of demonstrators, the community and families enjoying holiday events”.
“We’re here for Jamar”, one said, according to Henry Habu, who had been providing security for the demonstrators. They wanted the names of the officers involved in the shooting, and they have been identified.
At Clark’s funeral Wednesday, several speakers gave impassioned calls for justice.
“I’m hurting, my community needs me”. “But in light of tonight’s shootings, the family feels out of imminent concern for the safety of the occupiers, we must get the occupation of the Fourth Precinct ended and onto the next step”. Protesters have demanded that video be released, but authorities have said doing so at this time would taint the investigation. Belton said the vigil should end to “restore order” to the community, which he said has endured open gunfire, traffic and service interruptions, smoke from the protesters’ fires and hours of helicopter noise.
