Jones: Romo out for the season with clavicle injury
Super Bowl or bust, in some fans’ minds, and the team didn’t balk at that with an all-in approach during the offseason.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo left Thursday’s game against the Carolina Panthers with an injury.
The question now turns to Romo’s future after breaking his collarbone for the third time in his career.
Still, it’s the knockout blow to the Cowboys season that started with such high expectations. Their defense has played well, but not well enough to prevent other teams from outscoring them. He was immediately taken to the locker room for X-rays. Perhaps it makes some sense to shut Romo down for the season and regroup again in 2016.
“One of the things we do work on is, ‘Hey, we score with the ball, ‘” Rivera said. I really put our team in a hole. We continue to fight. “Early on we weren’t able to finish in some of the earlier games”.
There wasn’t much of a dance after that front flip, but we would be remiss if this feat of athletic prowess was left off the list. But if you want a lesson on just how valuable Bryant is, just look at how poorly the Cowboys played when Norman, who has to be the Defensive Player of the Year front-runner and the best cornerback in the National Football League at this point, took him out of the game.
They gambled on Greg Hardy. They gained nine rushing first downs in the game.
Romo’s latest injury has fueled speculation that the Cowboys had rushed him back to the field, but head coach Jason Garrett was quick to dispel that notion.
ESPN noted that Jones also said that Romo will not have surgery, but won’t be fully healed until March, effectively ending his season and in all likelihood the team’s playoff hopes. Talk about cruel irony for Cowboys Nation.
The injury means Matt Cassel, who went 0-4 during Romo’s initial absence, will be entrusted with finishing out this 3-8 season.
Barring an incredible run by a backup quarterback unheard of since the days of Steve Beuerlein all the way back in 1991, the playoffs seem like a clear impossibility for the Cowboys in ’15. Now, this will allow Greg Hardy to go after his former team, but the Panthers will be getting back their starting guard Andrew Norwell, which should help their offensive line a bit.
Just prior to the regular season, DMN columnist Tim Cowlishaw expanded upon the idea of Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins as a potential successor to Romo. But it could be a problem. The Cowboys released Weeden the week Romo was activated, and he signed with Houston. He indicated that it would be “all hands on deck”, and IF Romo’s further tests on Friday indicated he COULD return to the field, he would do so. The Cowboys toyed with the idea of drafting a quarterback last spring but did not pull the trigger.
