Boko Haram World’s Deadliest Extremist Group
The Taliban, which was the deadliest group in 2013, was ranked third in 2014, despite killing 3,477 people in terrorist attacks, which is a 38% increase in fatalities.
The secretary-General said there is no vindication for the attack or loss of life suffered by civilians.
No organization has yet claimed credit for the attack, but it is consistent with the behavior and within the territory of Boko Haram, a militant Islamic group that has been responsible for thousands of deaths in Nigeria since 2003.
The attack in the eastern city of Yola had killed at least 34 people and injured another 80.
“President Buhari reassures Nigerians that his administration is very much determined to wipe out Boko Haram in Nigeria and bring all perpetrators of these heinous crimes against humanity to justice”, said a press release.
Buhari accused his predecessor’s national security adviser of stealing billions of dollars meant to buy weapons to fight Boko Haram, when soldiers had just a few bullets and the armed group was rampaging across northeast Nigeria.
A Kano police spokesman said: “One went inside the market, the other stayed outside”.
Security forces reportedly fired shots to deter people from entering the scene of the blasts.
Buhari, who took office in May, offered his condolences to the families of the victims of Tuesday’s attack on Twitter, and renewed his campaign promise to destroy Boko Haram.
In November past year, at least 120 people were killed and 270 others wounded when two suicide bombers blew themselves up and gunmen opened fire during weekly prayers at Kano’s grand mosque.
Tuesday’s blast was the first in Nigeria this month, indicating the army’s strategy to cut off the Islamists’ supply lines and target their camps was paying off.
The Global Terrorism Index also noted that beyond the number of people killed, the general scope of terrorism also increased.
“Boko Haram, which pledged its allegiance to ISIL as the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) in March 2015, has become the world’s deadliest terrorist group, causing 6,644 deaths compared to ISIL’s 6,073”, it said.
