Tony Romo Officially Ruled Out For Season
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Cam Newton insists that beyond that All-American look and nice guy persona, Carolina Panthers teammate Luke Kuechly has a dark side..
The Carolina Panthers knocked the Dallas Cowboys around before knocking Tony Romo out of the game in a 33-14 win at AT&T Stadium. He snatched the pigskin at the Dallas 36 and sailed untouched into the end zone, and following a successful PAT by Graham Gano, Carolina led 7-0 with 14:01 left in the first stanza.
Some spoil-sport purists have complained that Newton’s dancing and celebrations are over the top or arrogant, but he’s just out there having fun.
Luke Kuechly and Kurt Coleman returned two of Romo’s three interceptions for touchdowns, and Newton ran for the Panthers’ only offensive score as they pushed their NFL-best winning streak to 15 regular-season games Thursday.
But we didn’t get to see much of Romo this season. His two third-down catches on Carolina’s third-quarter touchdown drive helped give the Panthers a series on which to hang their hat on an otherwise lackluster day. Matt Cassel came in for Romo and completed 13-of-19 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown and now he likely will start in place of Romo.
Now 3-8, Dallas’ season officially appears to be a wrap, even in the sorry NFC East. But coach Jason Garrett, whose job description probably requires him to live in an alternative reality, isn’t giving up, despite what appear to be long odds that Romo will play again this season. He was injured in Week 2 at Philadelphia and said the injury had a similar feel this time. Some of the decisions and poor decisions that I made were just uncharacteristic and very frustrating and cost our team today. Instead of re-signing feature back DeMarco Murray, the Cowboys let him join the Philadelphia Eagles via a big-money contract after running him down in his final year in Dallas, helping Murray put up career marks.
If the long-time Cowboys quarterback is to make a final championship run, next season may be his final chance to show he can get the team over the hump and back to the Super Bowl.
In Tebow’s only preseason start this season, he completed 11 of 17 pass attempts for 189 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
It was the fourth time Romo has thrown multiple pick-6s in a game, and the first since a 34-18 home loss in 2012 against a Chicago defense that was among the league’s best in forcing turnovers. “I mean, all of my good records will be broken and all my bad ones I’m going to keep”. However, his passion, ability, and importance to the team should be able to shine through in some way, and that’s something to watch for over the last handful of games of the year. I knew it would take a little time. The Panthers picked up the blitz, resulting in any easy completion to receiver Jericho Cotchery. That brought the score to 10-3, and that was as close as the ‘Boys would come for the rest of the game.
