Indeed, a Black Friday backlash appears to be gathering force at a time when some traditionalists are already bemoaning the way that Halloween, with its kitsch and goofy costumes and edible eyeball cakes, is slowly supplanting Guy Fawkes Day, the four-centuries-old British festival that falls on November 5. But it suffered an early setback when its website went down, in an early warning of the perils of spikes in traffic.

The event started off as an American tradition, falling on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Amazon, the biggest virtual shop in the world of Internet could not get away with just one Black Friday LED TV deal.
That represents a 42% hike in total financial loss compared to the 2013 festive period, when victims lost £9.5m.
