Man charged with killing of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee
A person has been arrested in this month’s shooting death of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee, Chicago police Officer Ron Gaines told CNN on Friday.
Investigators believe at least three people were involved in the murder, which McCarthy called “both targeted and calculated”.
On Nov. 2 they were driving around when they spotted Tyshawn at Dawes Park. and one of the men lured him into the alley where they shot him, Canellis said.
He was shot in the right temple and the bullet went through his left temple, according to a November 3 autopsy report reviewed by the Sun-Times.
McCarthy said they believe Tyshawn was targeted because of his father’s gang ties. One, Corey Morgan, has been arrested, another was already in jail on unrelated gun charges, and a third is still unaccounted for.
Tyshawn’s murder shocked Chicago, a city that’s seen hundreds of killings this year.
“We got an bad lot of intelligence from the community”, he said.
Court papers provided by the prosecutor’s office said that “Tyshawn’s death is the result of a gang war” between two particular gangs that “came to a boil” after Morgan’s brother, Tracy, was shot and killed in a vehicle with their mother on October 13.
Morgan is “an individual with an extensive violent history who likely shouldn’t have been on the streets”, McCarthy said.
A Chicago gang member has been arrested and charged with killing a nine-year-old boy earlier this month in what’s been described as an execution-style killing. McCarthy praised local residents, saying they overcame fears and risks of retaliation to come forward and offer tips to police. McCarthy said that the police still needed to work out details of what happened next, such as who pulled the trigger and who drove the getaway auto.
At a press conference Friday, Chicago Police Supt.
Asked about Stokes’ cooperation with authorities, McCarthy said he wasn’t being helpful, ” not at all”.
Police have rearrested Corey Morgan, a man who was initially named as a person of interest. He said the department was going to assign resources to ensure neither one of the gangs “can raise its head again”.
