Laquan McDonald protesters march on Michigan Avenue on Black Friday
Despite calls on social media for protesters to turn out for Chicago’s annual Thanksgiving Day parade on Thursday, no rallies materialized.
Some of the retailers blocked by protesters on Black Friday include Neiman Marcus and Tiffany & Co.
McDonald’s death has also been likened to that of Michael Brown – the black teenager also shot dead by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, in August previous year.
Meanwhile, some Black Friday shoppers continued to navigate the street and attempt to shop.

Hundreds of demonstrators held protests in the midst of Black Friday shopping on Chicago’s iconic Magnificent Mile, demanding broad reforms in the Windy City. Protesters are aiming for the resignation of the police superintendent, Gary McCarthy. “We want mass demonstrations, mass voter registration”. “You all ain’t got to treat us like dogs, man”. “It’s just not going to happen”.
CTU President Karen Lewis issued a statement urging members to express their “outrage and dignity” by participating in Friday’s march on Michigan Avenue on a stretch called the Magnificent Mile. Some protesters had apparently tried to get into the popular shopping center.
The protesters shut down Michigan Avenue near Water Tower Place in both directions for some time as multiple groups have converged.
What few shoppers there were browsed clothes and gadgets to piped-in Muzak and Frank Sinatra Christmas songs while a few feet away outside, protesters chanted through bullhorns. “We need a fresh start in the Chicago Police Department”. “Department stores have nothing, nothing, nothing to do with this”, he said. Hatch said the people want to see justice for Laquan McDonald and to see change in Chicago. He’s been ordered held without bond.
Activists have said more than 20 misconduct complaints were filed against Van Dyke during his career without him facing any disciplinary action.
