One Direction wins big at American Music Awards; Ariana Grande, Celine Dion
Justin Bieber, who closed the show, effectively literalized the cleansing he’s been after following several years of tabloid troubles with a performance of “Sorry” that had him drenched in a simulated downpour. Jared Leto, who introduced Dion, said his band 30 Seconds to Mars recently performed at the Bataclan, the Paris concert hall where 89 people were killed in the November 13 attack.
Host Jennifer Lopez opened the ceremony with an extended dance routine, set to a medley of the year’s biggest hits – including Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk, Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood and Drake’s Hotline Bling.
