Two in custody, one sought in ‘unspeakable’ murder of 9-year-old
About 4 p.m. on November 2, Tyshawn was lured into an alley in the 8000 block of South Damen and executed in retaliation against the boy’s father, authorities say.
McCarthy said police are still unraveling what roles each of the three suspects played in Tyshawn’s slaying.
But McCarthy said on Friday two murders and two non-fatal shootings “precipitated” Tyshawn’s killing.
This photo provided by the Chicago Police Department shows Corey Morgan.
Morgan’s brother and mother were shot after leaving a “gang call-in” meeting, an anti-violence effort by Chicago police and other law enforcement.
Kevin Edwards, of Chicago, is wanted for first-degree murder, police said.
Investigators believe at least three people were involved in the murder, which McCarthy called “both targeted and calculated”.
Even in a city numb to gun violence after more than 450 homicides this year alone, Tyshawn’s killing horrified the community. He vowed that gang factions involved in the killing and the other retaliatory acts had signed their own ” death warrants”.
Police officials said early Friday that more information would be announced later in the day.
The attorney who represented Morgan on the gun charges said that his client had been held in protective custody. Morgan then posted 10 percent of his bail in that case – or $100,000 – and was released.
“If you have a monster who’s willing to assassinate a 9-year-old, what is that person likely to do if they know that somebody’s cooperating with the case?” One of the suspects is unnamed and in custody on an unrelated charge.
FBI Director James Comey said recently that violent crime may be up in certain areas because police are holding back from aggressive tactics, fearful of being videotaped and accused of brutality.
“This was very clearly not a case of no snitching, but there was a lot of fear, which is completely understandable”, the superintendent said.
On Friday he said the father was not helping the police in the investigation. He was also grazed in the back, right forearm and right hand.
Police found the basketball that Tyshawn was known to carry with him everywhere he went near his body.
