Djokovic: It was the ideal season
Roger Federer will face Novak Djokovic in the World Tour Final after defeating Swiss compatriot Stan Wawrinka 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday. It was the world number one’s fifth title overall at the tournament – one short of Federer’s record – and was the flawless 48th birthday present for his coach Boris Becker. For Djokovic. this concludes what has been an incredible year. “I’m very proud for achievement”, Djokovic said.
“It could not have been a better finish”.
“It’s been a long season, but the best of my life”, Djokovic was quoted as saying on the ATP official website. ‘I didn’t expect this season but it has been as close to perfection as I could get. I’m just trying to enjoy every moment on the court.
“A back injury prevented Federer from facing Djokovic in the 2014 World Tour Finals title match”.
Murray, perhaps looking ahead to next week’s Davis Cup final, fell to Nadal and Wawrinka, never winning more than four games in a set. “I know I need to keep improving things if I want to have chances against Novak next year”, the 29-year-old said. “I had to change something I didn’t play well (on Tuesday)”. My motivation has always been just personal, that I want to improve myself, I want to be better.
The serve set the tone. I returned more balls back than I did five days ago. But perhaps his serving was the most effective element of the game: he made 16 of 19 second serves.
Rafael Nadal said he would have to redouble his efforts to return to form after the worst year of his career if he is to get the better of world number one Novak Djokovic next year. “For me, Rafa (Nadal) is the unique player in the field”. I tried my best this week, .
If I played the match again, that is what I would try to do different. Thought I played some great tennis, even in the finals: some points were insane. Congratulations on a ridiculous year.
Stir into the mix that this was the match denied to the packed O2 arena previous year, that their head-to-head was poised at 22-21 in Federer’s favour, and that their tennis qualities seem to generate a synergy on court.
As a result British team captain Leon Smith held up their departure and let the team spend yesterday practising at London’s Queen’s Club for the final, which is due to start on Friday in Ghent, around 30 miles from Brussels. “It will be a flawless ending only if I win”.
From 3-4 in first set, Roger won 7 games in a row, rushing to a 4-0 lead in second set and finishing the match shortly after that.
The second seeds, who had beaten previously top ranked Bob and Mike Bryan in the semifinals, were always on top after taking the first set with a single break and then moved clear with two more breaks in the second set. The Serb would be less forgiving, breaking again as Federer served to stay afloat.
Federer on the hand felt that he would’ve liked to have served better in the match and despite losing in straight sets, felt that it was a high-quality match.
Not that Federer’s first ace helped a great deal. Furthermore, Federer, playing so well at such an advanced age, is beyond reproach.
Federer finishes the season at 63-11 and was contesting in his 15th straight end of the year finals.
Credit Federer for hanging tough. “Like he has so many times this year”. Even the final point of the match was a double-fault.
