Local Planned Parenthood reacts to shooting in Colorado
Swasey was a six-year veteran of the department.
Three people have died after a man exchanged gunfire with police from inside a birth control clinic in the USA city of Colorado Springs, police say.
Colorado Springs is located less than 70 miles south of Denver, according to Google Maps, and has more than 400,000 residents. We have to determine exactly how many victims there are.
“Attention all units, attention all units”, another dispatcher excitedly called. The Planned Parenthood group has drawn anti-abortion protests in the past.
And then the gunman turned his weapon – described as a long gun – at officers.
It was a terrifying incident that has a country asking when these shootings will stop. “He’s shooting at you as you’re coming in!” One of those killed, a police officer and close to a dozen others were hurt – including several other officers.
“I’ve been shot!” another said.
Police Lt. Catherine Buckley says civilians and four officers were wounded in the shooting.
As the community mourns the fallen officer, the University of Colorado football team will observe a moment of silence during its game Saturday. He was shot and killed. The next briefing is planned for 6 p.m. ET. “I got back in the auto started it, put in reverse, started backing out, and he was in front of me and he was aiming at me”, he said.
Five minutes later, that officer had stopped moving, according to dispatch archives.
Vicki Cowart, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains, told CNN that she did not believe the center had been specifically targeted. Police said they do not know what the items were.
Buckley said the people inside the building included doctors, patients, nurses and others. Officials are also working to help anyone in the surrounding buildings who set up barricades during the standoff.
USA Today reported: “In a dramatic operation earlier Friday, with the gunman still on the loose, officers crept into the Planned Parenthood building and rescued six or seven civilians cowering in a bathroom nearby”. The officer was from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs police department, which was among the local law enforcement agencies that responded.
