Justice for Laquan protesters shut down Black Friday in Chicago
Reportedly, Van Dyke had a total of 18 civilian complaints against him over a 14-year period but to be honest, it could have been all 18 over the last couple of years alone for all we know.
The FOP also is paying the lawyer representing Van Dyke, Daniel Herbert, himself a former FOP member the union pays to represent Chicago cops in misconduct cases. If in fact as Alvarez has stated, that the Federal Bureau of Investigation contacted the Cook County state’s attorney’s office in November 2014, a few weeks after the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, and the two offices began working together on the case in December. That recollection of the shooting was later debunked in an article from the Atlantic. The officers found a boy, Laquan McDonald, standing in the street with a knife. At times, police had to escort shoppers inside. It suggested that there was either more to the story or that the story which we were given was utterly a farce. – Chicago politicians are calling for the police chief to resign after Tuesday’s release of a video showing a white officer killing a black teenager.
Alvarez, who faces a tough primary election in March, was criticized by her opponents, among law officials and constituents, for the timing of the charges against the officer and the release of the dash-cam video. These are the questions protestors are seeking answers to as well as making demands. The rally was led by the Reverend Jesse Jackson and other IL leaders in order to protest not only the McDonald murder, but the entire issue of racial bias and profiling that has led to the deaths of almost 800 African-Americans this year alone. The city of Chicago will not rest until he is tried and a guilty verdict is handed down. But protesters on the march succeeded in blocking main entrances on both sides of Michigan Avenue for more than three blocks.
The Rev. Michael Pfleger, a Roman Catholic priest and prominent local activist, said he thought Friday’s protest would cost businesses money because the publicity surrounding it would discourage shoppers from even venturing into the area.
Dozens of protesters also blocked doors at Neiman Marcus, Saks and Tiffany & Co.
Despite the crowds of protesters, and cold and rainy weather, plenty of shoppers were still heading into stores on Michigan Avenue, and seemed to be taking things in stride, at least before the protest really caused any disruptions on Michigan Avenue.
The family, who live in Auburn-Gresham, also participated in Friday’s protests. Instead, on Friday, protesters sought to disrupt shopping in the city on the traditionally busy day after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Activists said the intent of the protest was to slow down business on the Magnificent Mile. The city of Chicago lost much-needed tax revenue.
When told about McDonald’s shooting death, they were astounded. The tax, which will rise to 10.25 percent, affects Chicago more than any other city in her jurisdiction. None of that mattered this day.
I cant say that I disagree with anything thats going on, Harlan said as protesters continued their march down the stretch of Michigan Avenue known as the Magnificent Mile.
Outside Zara, a female security guard at the store yelled at protesters, telling them their actions were not peaceful.
