Providence 69, No. 11 Arizona 65
Providence guard Kris Dunn, right, shoots as Arizona guard Elliott Pitts defends during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game at the Wooden Legacy tournament, Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, in Fullerton, Calif.
Arizona tallied a 26-8 advantage in second-chance points and outscored Providence 16-6 in bench points but the Friars’ seven-point advantage in points off turnovers proved to be too much.
“I’ve never felt worse after a win last night”, Miller said.
Coach Ed Cooley turned to Dunn, telling him, “Yo man, you got us here, we’re going to ride your coattails all year”.
The game was tied at 63 entering the final two minutes after Dunn hit a pair of free throws to reach 13 points on a foul-plagued evening.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, November 29th when they face #3 Michigan State in the championship game.
Providence went ahead 42-36 while keeping UA scoreless for a stretch of 4:07 shortly after halftime but UA came back to take leads of 51-47 and 58-51 while Anderson kept powering his way inside.
Dunn hit a turnaround jumper for a 67-65 lead, and his fastbreak jumper off Parker Jackson-Cartwright’s turnover sealed the win.
“We’ve had a remarkable run in these tournaments”, Miller said.
It was both an odd and interesting game for Providence.
Ryan Anderson’s role might also expand – especially if Tarczewski is unable to play – and the 6-foot-9 forward showed he’s recovered from an ankle injury that kept him out of a game last weekend, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds against Santa Clara. “Tonight it was. We might have made some dumb plays, but I’m very, very proud of our team”.
No. 11 Arizona plays Boise State in the third-place game at Honda Center. The 11th-ranked Wildcats did not look acceptable against Santa Clara, eking out a 75-73 win over the winless Broncos of their opening game Thurs. “We haven’t experienced that in a long, long time”. Anderson scored nine points in the spurt that was capped by York’s 3-pointer.
The Wildcats trailed early in the second half and were leading by only four with under six minutes left before taking control in a game that was added as a regional contest for this event.
