Tyson Fury beats Wladimir Klitschko on points to win world heavyweight boxing
Tyson Fury is the new heavyweight champion of the world after the 27-year-old claimed a unanimous points win over Wladimir Klitschko in Dusselforf.
In a stunning upset, Tyson Fury defeated the world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko Saturday night. He named the second of his six sons Tyson, after Mike Tyson. Both fighters’ relative low weights suggest they are going for speed, and will do their best to end the fight prematurely.
The self-titled ‘Gypsy King said: “I always said what I’d do and I’ve delivered tonight”.
The fight became a little scrappier in the 11th round, with referee Tony Weeks deducting a point from Fury, after he punched Wlad in the back of the head. I know this game well. Whatever happens next is a blessing. Reach played a big role. He refused to work inside, instead just clinching and leaning on Fury rather than trying to work the body.
Bleacher Report scored the contest 116-111 for Fury.
“I saw my face in the mirror and it didn’t look so nice”. “Boxing is an art, it is not just about a one-punch KO”, he said. He had only been missing one major title – the WBC, which had belonged to his older brother Vitali before he chose to focus on his political career.
Following the decision Fury was inspired to belt out his own version of the Aerosmith classic “I don’t want to miss a thing”, and, of course, Twitter erupted…. When the decision was read, Fury was reduced to a child, jumping up and down, and kneeling in the center of the ring overcome by emotion.
“There is nothing he does which makes me think I won’t beat him”.
The fight was briefly delayed after Fury’s camp discovered that Klitschko had had his fists taped without an observer being present, which violates boxing rules.
Klitschko dismissed the issue, stating: “I’ve been tested a lot, over a quarter of a century”. That spat was resolved when he agreed to re-wrap. On Saturday, that appeared to be the case with a tired Klitschko that got outworked by Fury. The Briton also goaded Klitschko during and after the round. Klitschko landed a ferocious right hand again but Fury shook it off well as the fight finally caught fire. He will come back stronger after this defeat. But then he had Klitschko in trouble in the corner.
He added: “I’m grateful to him for giving me this chance and if I can be half the champion he is, I’ll be a happy man”.
