Yates helps Texans to 24-17 win over Jets
After replacing Hoyer in the game against the Bengals, Yates threw the game-winning touchdown in a 10-6 victory. There’s a lot of things that made me upset. “Obviously having two chances there at the end and not coming up with a touchdown on one of those drives hurts”.
The Jets cobbled together an odd yet satisfying drive to the first touchdown scored on the Texans in 13 quarters. First of all, Brandon Marshall had another huge drop. “But at the end of the day you have to pick yourself back up and fight”. How they thought going in that blocking JJ Watt one on one with Breno Giacomini was a good idea is tough to fathom. “We don’t control our own destiny”. With his offense sputtering – the Jets managed just 267 total yards on Sunday – coach Todd Bowles made clear his displeasure with the performance by the offense but stopped short of executing a quarterback change. “He’s just one of those rare players that doesn’t come around very often”.
The answer is far more complicated, which is why the coaching staff has spent more than a week studying what Houston’s defense does well.
“I think he’s fine”, O’Brien said. “If you give him something, he’s going to take it”. He had two touchdown passes on Sunday to help the Texans to a 24-17 win over the Jets, giving the team three wins in a row for the first time since 2012. Shorts rushed for 26 yards, added 51 receiving yards, and threw a 21-yard scoring pass to running back Alfred Blue in the third quarter, snapping a 10-10 tie at the 7:51 mark.
The Cowboys took advantage of the Dolphins inability to stop the run by rushing for 166 yards on 38 carries and led Miami in time of possession 38:50 to 21:10.
Yates was a rookie in the 2011 wild card round and saw time that season with Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart both out. They fell just shy of the playoffs, but emotions were high as the team looked to be on the upswing.
How did they put themselves in this situation Sunday? Then Eric Decker drew a 44-yard pass interference penalty on Quintin Demps, the longest penalty against a Jets opponent in five years.
At the half, hopkins led the team with four catches for 98 yards and a touchdown. The play came two plays after another big catch by Hopkins, where he again beat Revis and snagged the ball one-handed for an 18-yard gain. Marcus Williams, cut by Houston previous year, did it all on third-and-9, blitzing from Yates’ blind side, stripping the QB, and pouncing on the fumble at the Texans 47. They have an aging offensive line that next Sunday might be without Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold, who left the game early after gashing his right hand between his ring finger and pinky. Many fans were fearful of the instability at quarterback heading into the season, and that fear was proven justified when Bill O’Brien benched Brian Hoyer less than one full game into the season, only to see Ryan Mallett somehow make things far worse, culminating with the team deciding they were better off without him on the roster at all before the calendar even turned to November.
