Mozilla insists its no longer dependent on Google for cash
But that contract came to an end a year ago, and while it reaped the non-profit $330 million in revenues in 2014, it was widely reported at the time Google was looking to pay substantially less to renew the deal.
For many years, Mozilla generated income from a deal with Google, which paid for the privilege of being the default search engine on Firefox. As far as Google is concerned, it is still the default search engine throughout Europe but Mozilla isn’t really profiting from this arrangement according to Denelle Dixon-Thayer, the chief business & legal officer at Mozilla.
Mozilla’s aim is to provide users with unrestricted access to the internet.
The Mozilla Foundation has publicly boasted that it’s no longer dependent on Google for the bulk of its revenues, and that it hopes to make even more cash from its new search deals with companies like Yahoo! Mozilla then joined hands with Yahoo, Yandex and Baidu to be the default search engine in the Firefox browser, along with Amazon, eBay and Bing. Google is currently a part of Alphabet Inc. and the continued diversification of the services at Google means that Mozilla is now going to have to rely on a dedicated search engine for getting their job done. Meanwhile, Firefox still uses Google.co.uk as default search engine in the United Kingdom, which could also be replaced by Yahoo or Bing soon. It is pretty sure about making the expected amount of money this year.
Mozilla’s CFO Jim Cook is confident that its numbers for 2015 will look even better. The foundation also developed a Linux-based free mobile operating system called FireOS for tablets and smartphones, though they have not had much success as its a tough market to crack.
The market is skewing away from PCs and towards mobile, regardless of what Microsoft tells you about a PC renaissance, so it’s important for Firefox to find ways to retain its independence given that the Android platform is Google controlled and all browsers in Apple devices go through Apple’s WebKit.
However, the Firefox for iOS browser will not have the flexibility for Mozilla, as they have to follow Apple’s rules to launch browser apps by adhering to the “core Apple browser technology” policy.
He said that 2015 is going to show their continuous improvement with strong financials.
“We really look forward to displaying our results next year”, said Cook. It is the strongest open source browser amongst all browser companies.
