Record for goal-king Vardy as Leicester hold United
Jamie Vardy set a new Premier League record of scoring in 11 consecutive matches, but Leicester lost top spot as they drew 1-1 with Manchester United.
Not only had he become the first player to score in ten consecutive games in the same Premier League season, Vardy went one better when his 24th minute strike beat David de Gea and consigned him to the history books as the first play to score in 11 consecutive league games. This makes for a great rags-to-riches story and Vardy made the fairy tale come true.
Dealing with a United corner, the Leicester goalkeeper threw the ball to Christian Fuchs, who surged forward and gifted Vardy a wonderfully precise ball to latch onto and shoot beyond David De Gea.
Here is a video of that historic goal.
Van Gaal said that the players had expended a lot of effort in the 0-0 draw with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night. “The record was not in my mind, it would have affected my performance and the team’s, and that’s the last thing I wanted to do”, he said. “If we can break from a corner to get a goal it’s going to benefit the team”. Riyad Mahrez & N’Golo Kante of Leicester vs. Wayne Rooney & Juan Mata of Manchester United.
There is certainly evidence to justify the fans’ frustration, as after spending a huge sum of money in two summer transfer windows, Manchester United have failed to make the top five in goal scored so far this season. “You’re number one now and you deserved it. #11inarow”.
Bastian Schweinsteiger’s opened his account for Manchester United, as his side shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium versus Leicester City, on Saturday evening. “I hope Vardy continues these very good performances”.
After 14 minutes, his determination allowed him to dispossess Michael Carrick and set up N’Golo Kante for a shot which was deflected behind the United goal.
United goal-scorer Bastian Schweinsteiger said: “Vardy is playing really well and is unsafe”.
The only way is down at the moment for Newcastle and unless lessons are quickly learned, they’ll be relegated for the second time in eight years. Then we can not train Thursday and Friday and then the manager wants to play in another shape and we deliver that match.
On the result, he added: “We’re a bit disappointed we conceded the goal bang on half-time but overall the point was a fair result”.
“I am very happy because before the match I said to my players we had two objectives today: 1) win the match and 2) try to help Vardy score and achieve the record”.
There were angry words on the Newcastle training ground this week following the 3-0 home defeat to Leicester, but it looked as if they had cleared the air when Papiss Cisse’s first goal since the opening day of the season gave the visitors a 10th-minute lead.
