Rapper M.I.A
Up to date: 13:28 EST, 28 November 2015 Rapper M.I.A. has let go a compelling new music video highlighting the plight of refugees. “Borders” is the latest in a consistent, globe-hopping theme M.I.A. has been creating for her forthcoming album.
Fittingly, the lyrics tackle global issues that have been gaining more and more exposure, both online and on the ground, especially where the contentious issue of refugees and police brutality are concerned.
The lyrics for Borders blasts governments for trying to create an “Us v Them” mentality and for shallow Western values and indifference to the crisis. “I want to dedicate this video to my uncle Bala, my icon and role model”, M.I.A. wrote in a tweet posted this morning. The album’s also going to include “Swords”, a recent track released as part of the July audiovisual experiment “Matahdatah Scroll 01 Broader Than a Border”. M.I.A.is bringing to the fore with the “Borders” project that everyone is in the same boat, and we can’t just stick up fences to keep people separate when we are all of the same world.
Along with the return of Santigold, M.I.A. is on her way back into the music scene.
“Thank you for helping my family come to England and taking us out of Srilanka and saving us”.
