French President Francois Hollande is to make an extraordinary address to the leaders here Friday in what appears to be the first appearance by a French head of state at the biennial Commonwealth meeting – a gathering of countries formerly under British rule.
“We want to be part of the solution and at the table”, said CAPP spokeswoman Chelsie Klassen.
Other elements of the Paris agreement, including around accountability, openness and transparency, and disclosure of how countries are reaching their goals, will likely be binding, he said. “It is yet another example that Canada is once again a serious player in the global fight against climate change”, stated Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada. “We are deeply concerned about the threat posed by climate change, which continues to grow and to put at risk the economic, social, environmental, and cultural well-being of our member states and citizens”, the statement said. The investment announced today will help build a more environmentally sustainable future for generations to come.
The Liberals say the former Tory government’s promise will act as the “floor” for what Canada will propose going forward.

The huge Paris event is the 21 meeting known as the Conference of the Parties (COP21).

At the 2009 United Nations climate change summit in Copenhagen, then-environment minister Rob Renner lead the Alberta delegation on behalf of the Progressive Conservative government.

On Friday, Trudeau pledged another $2.65 billion over five years toward a United Nations climate fund to aid developing countries. India is a country that could qualify for some of that funding.
