Iowa State vs. West Virginia
Iowa State wide receiver Quenton Bundrage said seeing his coach walk off the field for the last time “definitely wasn’t a good feeling”.
The West Virginia Mountaineers sent their seniors off with a win in their last home game, and Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads out with a loss, this afternoon in Morgantown.
He reportedly makes about $500,000 per year at Toledo, ranking among the lowest paid head coaches in Division I FBS. The Cyclones (3-9, 2-7) went winless on the road, something that hadn’t happened since 2008.
Campbell, 35, led Toledo to a share of the MAC West title but won’t play in the MAC Championship Game after losing to Western Michigan on Friday.
Josh Lambert kicked three field goals for the Mountaineers (7-4, 4-4), who won their fourth straight. The Mountaineers came into this game averaging around 6 yards per carry, but the Iowa State defense managed to hold them to about 4.5 yards per attempt today.
West Virginia will finish out the regular season next Saturday in Manhattan, KS against noted wizard Bill Snyder and his Kansas State Wildcats. The score was set up by a KJ Dillon interception that ended a promising opening drive from Iowa State at the West Virginia 15. He also had a 53-yard kickoff return to set up a field goal. A West Virginia run game that had struggled up to that point – rushing for just 59 yards on 20 carries – accrued 83 yards on just seven plays on a drive that effectively put the game out of reach for the Cyclones. In the fourth quarter, a third fake on fourth-and-14 inside the Cyclones’ own 20 resulted in an incompletion, and West Virginia promptly punched in a 9-yard touchdown by Rushel Shell. He finished the season with 1,339 yards.
