I would never mock a person with disabilities
Donald Trump denies allegations after appearing to mock New York Times Reporter Serge Kovalski, who suffers from a chronic condition.
“Now, the poor guy”, Trump said of Kovaleski, “you’ve got to see this guy”.
In a statement Thursday, Trump adamantly denied that his comments or gestures were meant to mock Kovaleski.
Trump has been citing that report to defend his (unsubstantiated) claim that “thousands of Muslims in New Jersey were seen celebrating the destruction of the Twin Towers”.
Over the past week, Trump has repeatedly said that he saw “thousands and thousands” of Muslims celebrating in northern New Jersey on 9/11. Kovaleski told CNN this week that he did “not recall anyone saying there were thousands, or even hundreds, of people celebrating”, however.
Now, Trump is claiming that he never made fun of Kovalevski to begin with and doesn’t know why people are so upset, especially because he has no idea who Kovalevski is despite his “all-time great memory”. I don’t remember.’ He’s going, ‘I don’t remember.
Almost six months into his presidential bid, the news media is still struggling with the conundrum of covering Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Judge for yourself. Here’s the portion of Trump’s speech where he references Serge Kovaleski.
And once again, Trump claimed that Kovaleski has been trying to walk back his reporting, which he isn’t so much doing as correcting Trump’s interpretation of it, but Trump has already made it clear he can’t be expected to check every little thing for facts. You ought to see the guy: ‘Err, I don’t know what I said.
Ruderman said Trump would benefit from a “series of sensitivity training sessions” and offered to provide them.
The reporter said that he had previously covered Mr. Trump numerous times while working for The Daily News. “I don’t know if he is [NFL player] J.J. Watt or Muhammad Ali in his prime – or somebody of less athletic or physical ability”, Trump said.
“Somebody at the financially failing and totally biased New York Times said that, over the years, I have met Mr. Kovaleski”, Trump said in a statement. I don’t know him.
The Republican presidential front-runner responded by firing off a raging tweetstorm and multiple statements blasting The Times and accusing the reporter of “using his disability to grandstand”. How would he know Kovaleski was nice if he didn’t know who he was?
Trump bragged that he was able to handle the situation diplomatically, after a protester who interrupted his rally last week was tackled to the ground. ‘I’ve interviewed him in his office, ‘ he added.
It socially unacceptable to mock someone’s disability as part of the national political discourse, said Jay Ruderman from Ruderman Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities to have education and employment.
