Tyson Fury beats Wladimir Klitschko to become world heavyweight champion
A delighted Tyson Fury insisted that he always knew he would beat Wladimir Klitschko after producing one of the biggest shocks in recent heavyweight history. The judges saw it for Fury via a 115-112, 115-112, 116-111 unanimous decision.
Klitschko, the premier heavyweight of his era, relinquished the IBF belt he had held since 2006, the WBO title he’d owned since 2008, and the WBA crown he’d had since 2011.
“I came here to Germany in the lion’s den to a great, great champion in Wladimir Klitschko and my lord, my saviour, my rock, my foundation, gave me the glory tonight”.
Fury’s trainer Peter said that his mental skills had made the difference.
A mandatory challenger to the 39-year-old Klitschko, the 27-year-old Brit left the German fans in utter disbelief after the decision was announced.
As promised, Fury celebrated his win with a nice rendition of Aerosmith’s “I Don’t want to Miss a Thing” to his wife Paris, worthy of the Voice UK.
“The speed was missing”, the 6-9 Klitschko said.
After losing a point, Fury admitted that he would not be able to come back and win the fight.
It was the first time Klitschko lost since April 2004, snapping a 22-fight winning streak.
“I didn’t put the punches in and could not find the right key to open up the fight”.
Fury’s management insisted the canvas was too soft and after much discussion and threats to call the fight off, Klitschko’s camp relented and removed some of the foam padding from the ring floor. It was the lowest output from him that I’ve ever seen. “I wasn’t fazed by the crowd because I knew I was going to be the new heavyweight champion of the world”. Klitschko looks frustrated unable to land any successful shots and again Fury drops his hands and teases the champion at the end of the round.
“There will be a rematch”, Klitschko, whose record now stands at 64 wins and four defeats, said in a ringside interview.
Fury is a brawler who can rip into his opponents and go for the kill once he senses an opening.
“A dream comes true”.
