TCU’s Boykin will start vs. Baylor
“It happened early, so we’ve grown up and we’ve gotten better playing together, but they handled it so well”, Patterson said. He’ll be over that. “Some of the guys we expect to be our future guys that make plays, stepped up”. He also ran for 42 yards and a score. It would have been close, but there was never a measurement because coach Art Briles was calling for a timeout from the sideline before the snap.
When play resumed, Chafin took a handoff and ran into defenders Julius Lewis and Ty Summers, the last of Summers’ school-record 23 tackles.
“They’ve always not liked us very much, and that goes way, way back to when the Southwest Conference split up”, Baylor senior left tackle Spencer Drango said. “They know what it feels like to play in a big game”. “It could have gone either way at the end”. Both missed Saturday night’s 30-29 loss at Oklahoma, as did Trevone Boykin, though the senior dual-threat quarterback – who was at one time a Heisman Trophy front-runner – could play against Baylor after hobbling around on a sore right ankle. Tcu Horned Frogs recorded 392.4 passing yards and 223.9 rushing yards while allowed 215.6 passing yards and 173.0 russhing yards with turnover differential of -0.5. The Bears will finish their season next Saturday in Waco against Texas. After one first down, Baylor elected to let the game go to overtime. It took defensive end Josh Carraway’s 56-yard fumble return for a touchdown for the Horned Frogs to tie the game 14-14.
“Crazy, man. A 12-round fight really, to be honest”, Boykin said. But we all know the history, we all know how last year’s game was officiated, and we all know how this game means maybe just a little bit more.
The Horned Frogs then stopped Baylor running back Devin Chafin behind the line of scrimmage on fourth down to win.
Sparked by a 44-yard run by Johnny Jefferson, the Baylor offense looked as smooth as ever, going 75 yards on seven plays. That was the only loss by the Horned Frogs, who shared the Big 12 title with Baylor before the league’s two private schools were the first teams left out of the inaugural College Football Playoff.
Chafin’s 5-yard score gave Baylor a 14-7 lead on its next possession, but the Bears did not score the rest of the half. There was plenty of that in TCU’s double-overtime victory over Baylor, as it was more of a contest of slip and slide with a leather ball tossed inside than a football game.
“I don’t think anybody likes the rain and the cold”.
“I consider that one of the plays of the game”, Briles said. “But it’s just hard to be real effective in those conditions”.
According to Fox Sports in a November 26 report, the Bears will start third-string quarterback Chris Johnson tonight and with a win, they continue their quest for a third-straight conference title.
As the game progressed, though, and rain continued to soak the ball and field, neither team established much traction on offense. The TCU band was on the field during the invocation and about to perform the National Anthem when the field was cleared because of that warning.
“It’s frustrating. It’s the end of the year, and you’ve got two good football teams that you want everyone to see the best of everything”, Patterson said. [But] today was a survival game.
