Tyson Fury shocks Wladimir Klitschko to become world heavyweight champion
Before anyone gets too excited about a possible full heavyweight unification between newly crowned world champion and WBA/WBO/IBF titleholder Tyson Fury and WBC titleholder Deontay Wilder, hold your horses.
And now he wants to rule like Klitschko did after handing him his first defeat in 11 years. “They were average heavyweights”, Fury told Sky Sports.before the fight.
So it was a double celebration last night in Dusseldorf. The fight, postponed once due to a Klitschko injury, nearly did not take place with Fury’s team complaining earlier on Saturday over the thick ring canvas that they claimed limited his movement.
Haye, who is preparing for his own comeback and is scheduled to fight Mark de Mori in London in January, twice pulled out of fights to face Fury with injury but says he has no plans to face the traveller in the future. Fury’s numerous technical flaws presented opportunities that an aging Klitschko simply couldn’t take advantage of. “I’m bred to be a fighter”. As the fight progressed, Klitschko sustained cuts under both eyes.
He added: “I’m grateful to him for giving me this chance and if I can be half the champion he is, I’ll be a happy man”.
In the build up to the fight, Fury had repeatedly said that he will be victorious against Klitschko because he is 12 years younger with superior reach and height.
In the end, however, the judges saw the same fight as the majority of the ringside observers and scored it 115-112, 115-112, and 116-111 all in favour of Tyson Fury.
The win gave Fury the WBA, WBO and IBF titles.
“You’re a great champion Vlad, thanks very much for having me”, said Fury, moments after his win was announced.
Tyson Fury celebrated beating Wladimir Klitschko by singing AEROSMITH in this ring to his wife. According to his promoter Bernd Boente, there is a rematch clause in the contract. Fury waited Wladimir out until he was old to fight him, and then was able to beat when he got old. The 6-foot-9 Fury seemed to frustrate Klitschko, who was tentative from the start and rarely threw punches, landing even fewer. “We were trying for two years so this is obviously the icing on the cake”, Fury said.
