Browns undecided if Manziel will be active for Ravens

After promising Browns coach Mike Pettine that he would behave during the bye week, Johnny Manziel did his best party animal imitation and was demoted, from starter for the rest of the season, to third-string quarterback.

The last straw for the Cleveland Browns was the video, which showed Manziel partying and holding a bottle of champagne while singing rap music after last week’s Ohio State-Michigan State game at Columbus, Ohio.

Pettine said the Browns did not consider cutting Manziel, a first-round draft pick who has made more headlines with his off-field antics than anything hes done between the lines. The benching was a hard blow to the 22-year-old, but Pettine said it was essential if he’s going to develop into a full-time starter.

Pettine deflected any questions about Manziel’s troubled week, and said he was just focusing on Monday night’s televised game with the Ravens. One day I think we played golf.

“Josh has demonstrated it throughout that he’s a competitor”, Pettine said Friday.

“Everyone in this organization wants what is best for Johnny just like we do for every player in our locker room”, Pettine said in a statement that is posted on the team’s official website. Not to mention he was benched week 17 last season for a similar situation, and a practice squad quarterback, Connor Shaw, ended up getting the start instead, essentially just to prove a point because Shaw had not even been in consideration to play in an National Football League game before the incident, according to USA Today.

Last week the Cleveland Browns announced that Johnny Manziel was going to be their starting quarterback for the remainder of the season. It was very unusual for me, but I care about him.

“When he gets his opportunities, he’s made the a lot of them, so what happens off the field is between him and the coach, and whoever else, and I can only assess what I see when he’s in this building because I did not spend the weekend in Austin, so I can’t really talk about that”.

In the wake of Manziel’s fall, Josh McCown is the starting quarterback, and Austin Davis will serve as the primary backup moving forward.

“Josh McCown is our starter,” Pettine said.

He said: ‘You know there’s all kinds of people that come out, . “It was something that, its regrettable but we feel we had to do.”. To be successful at the position requires a great understanding of what is involved in the non-physical aspects – the leadership, the trust, the accountability, responsibility, the diligence.

DeFilippo said that coaches have not determined if Manziel would be dressed and active for the game as the No. 3.

“This is a heavy dose of adversity.

“We went straight at it”, Gruden said regarding his time spent working with Manziel.

McCown complimented Manziel for taking notes in meetings and doing everything he was supposed to do Wednesday despite the circumstances.
