Match A Draw, But Vardy Sets Goal Record
Jamie Vardy became the first player to score in 11 straight English Premier League games in helping Leicester draw 1-1 with Manchester United, capping a frenzied day of goals and drama that ended with Manchester City back in first place.
Vardy struck with his first chance of note, haring onto a pass from Christian Fuchs down the inside-right channel and drilling a shot across United goalkeeper David de Gea.
The goal away to Leicester was his first in the Premier League – his strike against Watford last weekend went down as an own goal – and he is part of a United midfield that has been accused of lacking penetration.
From Stocksbridge Park Steels, Halifax Town, Fleetwood Town and now Leicester City, Vardy has always scored goals but the one he scored against Manchester United on Saturday has placed him in the record books.
Leicester City’s Premier League record breaker Jamie Vardy tried to steer clear of the hype surrounding his history-making goal against Manchester United.
As the fans and media alike began to comprehend witnessing Vardy’s incredible achievement, the clash settled back into a familiar pattern with the Foxes working even harder to try and unsettle their rattled opponents.
“It’s unbelievable, I received a bit carried away with myself”, Vardy stated.
That was the culmination of a half that had centred around Vardy, the former non-league player who has only been in the ranks of full-time professional football for three-and-a-half years.
“I asked my players in the meeting session two things; one, to win the match, and two, to help Jamie to achieve the record”, he said.
“It was good for us but maybe he was very, very angry”. If I’d thought about the record too much it would have affected my performance and I didn’t want that. “Yeah there has but if I let it get to me then it would affect my performance so I just got on with it and didn’t let it sink in my head”, he said.
“After the disappointment against PSV we have dominated the game”, van Gaal explained.
“We’ve got a lot of pace in the team and counter-attacking is a big advantage for us and if we can break as quick as we have from defending a corner to getting a goal then it’s going to benefit the team” he said. “Yes, because he is important for us like Klose is for the national team”.
Ross Barkley looked to have given Everton victory when he restored their lead in the fifth minute of stoppage time, only for Stanislas to snatch an implausible equaliser with a cool header three minutes later. They have 10 or 12 chances to score in a game.
