Tyson Fury beats Wladimir Klitschko to be new heavyweight boxing world champion
After a Nine Year reign as Heavyweight Champion, Vladamir “Dr. Steelhammer” Klitschko (64-4, 53KOs) lost a unanimous decision to Tyson Fury (25-0, 18KOs) at the Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.
In a scrappy fight that was far from a classic contest with most of the action reserved for a frenetic last round, Fury, the first Romany ever to win a world title, taunted Klitschko on an incredible night, talking to him and dancing to a victory which few had believed possible.
Final scores from the three judges were 115-112, 1115-112, 116-111 in favour of the challenger Tyson Fury.
A rematch is certainly in play – Wladimir’s team confirmed after the fight that he does have a rematch clause – but Klitschko’s retirement appears to be coming sooner than later.
Klitschko, the premier heavyweight of his era, relinquished the IBF belt he had held since 2006, the WBO title he had owned since 2008 and the WBA crown he’d had since 2011. In the mighty name of Jesus, I thank you.
Ricky Hatton and Manchester United were among the first to congratulate new heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury.
Addressing his doubters after his victory, Fury said, “I always said what I’d do and I’ve delivered tonight”.
“I knew I would do it and I knew I would beat Wladimir tonight”. I’m a true natural fighter.
Fury has no problem giving the 39-year-old veteran his chance, even if it is in Germany again.
“So, if Deontay Wilder wants a unification fight he is going to have to wait, because Wladimir Klitschko has a round two….ding ding ding!” It’s going to happen, but it’s worth wondering if Klitschko, who turns 40 in March, can really do anything differently, or if Fury is just a bad matchup and a fighter who makes him too uncomfortable to pull the trigger.
“I never took my eyes off him during the stare-off”.
“I felt a lot more love from them (his fans) then I felt for him (Klitschko) from his”.
Ukraine’s Wladimir Klitschko’s dominating run in boxing’s heavyweight division is over.
In total, Klitschko won 22 consecutive bouts from 2005 to 2015 and defended the heavyweight title 18 times in a row before relinquishing the belts on Saturday to Fury. “Tyson was quick with his hands and his body movement, and I couldn’t land the right punches”. He landed some good shots on me and not one rocked me. “We worked so hard for this”.
