Jamie Vardy breaks Premier League record but Foxes are foiled by United
Despite Van Gaal and his backroom staff’s video homework the Reds still fell behind at Leicester to a typical goal from Vardy who scored in his11 consecutive Premier League match to demote Ruud van Nistelrooy’s 2005 feat for United.
“I am very happy because before the match I told my players we have two objectives; one, to win the match and two, try to help Vardy achieve the record”, Ranieri told Sky Sports. Sunderland capitalized on the sending-off of Ryan Shawcross right after halftime to beat Stoke 2-0 through goals in the final eight minutes by Patrick van Aanholt and Duncan Watmore.
“There has [been a lot of pressure this week] but obviously if I let it get to me it’s going to affect the performance so I’ve kept my head down and tried to concentrate on a game we could get three points in”. We have come straight from a corner. “It’s unbelievable. I think I got a bit carried away with myself [during the celebrations]”. An honour and great feeling to have scored for the first time for Manchester United. That record was set by former Sheffield United striker Jimmy Dunne.
United are a point behind joint leaders Manchester City and Leicester following Saturday evening’s stalemate.
Claudio Ranieri led the tributes to Premier League record-breaking forward Jamie Vardy but the Leicester manager is still only interested in ensuring his team remains clear of relegation.
It was his 14th goal of the league campaign, which makes him the division’s top scorer, and comes just three years after he was playing for Fleetwood Town in English football’s semi-professional fifth tier.
But the fixture was all about Vardy, who took until just the 24th minute to produce the historic goal that the Leicester faithful, and many neutrals, were hoping for.
The Leicester fans, who had greeted Vardy’s every move and touch with great expectancy until that point, erupted in celebrating a goal that looked capable of returning Leicester to the top of the Premier League table. “We organised ourselves defensively to contain Vardy so we have to be disappointed at the way Leicester scored”, the United manager said after witnessing what can only be described as a trademark Vardy strike.
Vardy struck in the first half when he was played in before slotting the ball past David de Gea but the Foxes were pulled back just before half-time. Along with his header, Schweinsteiger bossed the midfield for Louis van Gaal’s men, controlling the tempo and possession, especially in the second half of play. “We knew he [Vardy] was capable of making a goal like that, so it is a pity that we conceded that goal”. “I could have chosen (Anthony) Martial because they were both not running in behind”.
“We want to keep him here for a long time”.
