Cowboys QB Tony Romo out for season with fractured collarbone
The Dallas Cowboys’ season died along with it, while raising serious questions about the franchise’s long-term plan at the position.
Romo missed seven games earlier this season with a fractured left collarbone, and will miss the remainder of the season after re-injuring the same collarbone in Thursday’s 33-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
This was a lost season for Cowboys fans who expected Jones to deliver them another Super Bowl.
“Whether you like it not, when you don’t play for eight weeks it’s tough to come back and be the guy you want to be”, said Cowboys Vice President Stephen Jones. “I’ve got to switch it up sometimes”.
I’ll admit it, if I didn’t write about the Cowboys, I would probably shut it down and watch hockey until the draft. More tests were planned for Friday. The defending NFC East champions were already headed to an eighth loss in nine games a week after Romo ended the skid in his return at Miami.
Romo also didn’t require surgery the first time around, when he was placed on the injured reserve/designated to return list. It’s the second this season that he has broken the same collarbone. I understand that the team was in panic mode after losing seven straight games without their leader, but you have to take emotion out of the equation when making these types of decisions. Williams will need surgery for a meniscus injury that he suffered in Week 6.
A disappointed Dallas Head Coach Jason Garrett said in his postgame press conference that the rest of the season for his team would be about accountability.
Panthers safety Kurt Coleman intercepted Romo on the game’s third offensive play.
The injury means Matt Cassel, who went 0-4 during Romo’s initial absence, will be entrusted with finishing out this 3-8 season.
Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, told USA Today that the team still has a lot to learn from Romo.
To add insult to injury, Gano added another 25-yard field goal on the final play of the dismal first half, pushing the score to 23-3 at the intermission.
Rod Marinelli either doesn’t have enough good players on defense, or his scheme is old and needs to be rebuilt. “He shows up. He prepares extremely well”. He missed the last 15 games previous year with Carolina because of his domestic violence case.
The Cowboys spent the offseason building a team they thought could end a 20-year championship drought.
MOVING THE CHAINS: Newton had five first-down completions on third-and-5 or longer, and three of them went for 24 yards. His two third-down catches on Carolina’s third-quarter touchdown drive helped give the Panthers a series on which to hang their hat on an otherwise lackluster day.
