Djokovic crushes Federer to win tennis Masters for 5th time
In a match that essentially symbolized the year that was 2015 in the ATP World Tour, Novak Djokovic dispatched Roger Federer 6-3, 6-4 to win the ATP World Tour Finals in London for the fourth straight year on Sunday afternoon.
He has reached the final in all but one tournament and the only players who have beaten him are monster-serving Ivo Karlovic, Stan Wawrinka, Murray and Federer (three times). “Obviously, I’m very proud, with my team, for the achievements this season”, he said. It would be fantastic if he put together two seasons as good as this one, however no one looks likely to stop him.
Although the Swiss sporting marvel had ended Djokovic’s 23-match winning streak earlier this week in the group stage, the Serbian once again got the better of Federer in grand finals.
Djokovic defeated Roger Federer, 6-3, 6-4, to claim the trophy. “I tried my best, I thought I played some great tennis all week and in the final, but Novak deserves the win today like so many times this year”.
“I cherish every moment that I play competing on such a level”. With Rafael Nadal playing below his normal standard, even on clay, Djokovic was into the final in Paris through the Spaniard. If you don’t play very well, you’re going to have a hard time.
Novak Djokovic has set his sights on surpassing his nearly ideal year by winning the only two major titles to have eluded him – the French Open and Olympics.
At the end of a disappointing season in which he failed to capture a major title for the first time in 11 years, Nadal had a spring in his step.
Federer, 34, had been quick to play down the significance of his group-stage win and Djokovic did indeed prove a very different opponent in the final, just as he had at Wimbledon and the US Open. “I went on a vacation for 10 days after the U.S. Open and (a Davis Cup playoff tied against the Netherlands), which I think was great for my body to heal (and). for my mind to get away from it all”.
“I can’t predict the future”, Djokovic said. I’m just trying to enjoy every moment on the court. Only John McEnroe (1984), Jimmy Connors (1974) and Federer (2005 and 2006) have finished with a better winning percentage and with as many or more titles. That gives the top players who participated in London little time to rest and recoup before a busy season that will also include the Olympic games in Brazil. I don’t have a sense of urgency.
Djokovic appeared to waste a big chance to clinch the win when Federer fought back from 0-40 to hold his serve in the eight game, but the defiant response simply delayed the inevitable.
To say that Novak Djokovic is the undisputed World No 1 will be an understatement. I don’t chase anything.
“He’s playing great. It’s going to be hard for him to play a bad year, that’s for sure”.
In the 2014 semis, they embarked on one of the most draining matches of the season – almost three hours of cut-throat tennis that Federer won 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8/6) after saving four match points along the way.
“Overall this season has been as close to perfection as it can get”, Djokovic said afterwards.
