Suspect identified in Colorado Planned Parenthood shooting

The dead policeman in Friday’s shooting was identified as Garrett Swasey, 44, a campus police officer for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs who joined city police in responding to the first reports of shots fired, authorities said.
Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey said five police officers were among the injured, who were being treated in local hospitals. There were no immediate details about the two civilians killed.
The gunman didn’t get past a locked door leading to the main part of the facility, the regional head of Planned Parenthood said Saturday.
Dear is scheduled to make his initial appearance in court on Monday in El Paso County.
“We don’t have any information on this individual’s mentality, or his ideas or ideology”, said Colorado Springs police Lieutenant Catherine Buckley during a press conference on Friday.
Sources also said the long rifle Dear allegedly used Friday wasn’t the only weapon he had with him and that Dear took several guns and ammunition to the scene as well.
“Detailed plans probably aren’t appropriate, but I think we have to come back and look at all aspects of why these shootings have continued to occur – you know, in OR, OR SC OR Colorado”, Hickenlooper said.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), firearms are the cause of death for more than 33,000 people in the United States every year, a number that includes accidental discharge, murder and suicides, which are on the increase.
“What we really have to start asking ourselves is what can we do as a nation to rectify the situation”, Carson said today on ABC’s “This Week”. They were concerned that he had planted improvised explosive devices meant to cause even more destruction.
At the service the president of Planned Parenthood’s Colorado branch said the organisation would not be cowed by the attack.
At one point, officers called over the radio that Dear had gone inside the Planned Parenthood and was firing out the windows at propane tanks placed around the clinic’s parking lot.
Two vigils were planned in Colorado Springs Saturday for the shooting victims.
According to NBC News, the extent to which the “baby parts” remark played into any decision to target the Planned Parenthood office wasn’t yet clear. And we know that more Americans and their families had fear forced upon them.
“We’re very pleased that our own security systems were operating at top-notch”, she added.
The phrase clearly references a series of videos released by the Center for Medical Progress, an anti-abortion advocacy group.
