The Auburn defense has been middle of the road during Malzahn’s tenure. Offensively, we need to get better.

Griffith emerged as an Iron Bowl hero for the Crimson Tide (11-1, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) two years after his last-play attempt touched off the Tigers’ winning Kick-Six play.

Griffith will leave dwelling on the past to others. “I thought they would be more dominating”, said one fan. They’ve been strong against the run all year, and just two weeks ago the Tide sacked Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott nine times. A last-minute touchdown run gave Henry the Alabama single-season touchdown record.

“I’m not surprised. We all expected it”, said a young Crimson Tide fan. “He didn’t want to come out”.

I’m still basking in the afterglow that was the 2013 Iron Bowl, after that game I firmly believe that Auburn can win ANY game AND that unicorns can fly. After making the catch, no one was even close to catching Smith on the 77-yard touchdown reception. Smith tipped the deep ball from Jeremy Johnson into the air twice with his right hand before collecting it and racing to the end zone for the Tigers’ longest pass play of the season.

He completed 17 of 26 passes against Auburn for 176 yards. This year should feature a lower scoring game, since Auburn has gone from having one of the most prolific offenses in the country to 10 in the SEC in total offense. That’s the biggest game that I’ve ever played in. Sophomore running back Peyton Barber has rushed for 947 yards and 13 touchdowns while senior Ricardo Louis is the best of the receivers with 44 catches for 675 yards. The Tigers have won outright in only one game where they were not favored.

“Right now, we are hurting over this game”, Malzahn said. “We just did what we could and we played against a good team today”.

Donaldson spent three seasons at Auburn before the Chicago Cubs selected the then catcher in the first round of the 2007 MLB Draft.

Griffith was 5 on 5 on field goals, becoming the first kicker in Tide history to make five field goals in an Iron Bowl. Johnathan Ford was flagged for hitting Coker out of bounds. There’s nothing really at stake here for Auburn but pride-not that pride is inconsequential, but for a man like Nick Saban, pride is what losers cling to when they can’t win on the field.

Gus Malzahn’s Auburn teams have been known for their dominant run game in past years, but the Tigers have struggled on offense this year.
