Tyson Fury ends Wladimir Klitschko’s heavyweight reign
Fury, who opened the Team Fury gym in Halliwell Road last year, ended Klitschko’s nine-year reign with the slick points win in Dusseldorf.
Tyson Fury has welcomed the prospect of facing Wladimir Klitschko again – most probably in England – after being crowned the new WBA-IBF-WBO world heavyweight champion on Saturday.
As is often the case with an exciting title fight, there’s speculation about a rematch between Fury and Klitschko.
“I was well prepared for this fight but he was quick for his height”.
When his fighter was just an up-and-coming teenager Egan set out what Fury’s CV might look like and it included this prediction: “2016: Undisputed heavyweight champion of the world”.
“I want to thank my lord and saviour Jesus Christ for giving me this victory”, said a tearful Fury who has now won all 25 of his professional fights.
I didn’t have this confidence for nothing.
“I felt a lot more love from them (his fans) then I felt for him (Klitschko) from his”. I’ve always been confident and I showed why in this fight. “We know Wladimir’s potential and that’s the question: In a rematch do we see him back in his old form or that today was no accident?” He landed some good shots on me and not one rocked me.
Fury became the first world champion to have come through Jimmy Egan’s Boxing Academy in Wythenshawe, but they could soon have another on their hands.
“I never believed he would do it, but he did”, said Kitschko. “I must admit that Tyson Fury was faster and better”, he said, adding he will “definitely” use the option of a rematch.
Fury answered numerous questions with his display at the ESPRIT Arena, as he proved that he could step up at world level and deal with a true great of the sport in an environment that he hadn’t previously experienced. Fury’s power shots were 48 of 202, or 24 percent connect rate, and his landing average was 4 of 17 per round.
But once the fight started, the fooling stopped and he thoroughly flummoxed his opponent with an unorthodox southpaw style.
“It’s a very great honor for me to be sat here, champion of the world four times over”.
The fact that it was an insipid encounter from a technical standpoint will soon be forgotten, as this was a superb gameplan from the Fury camp executed to near-perfection and a truly historic moment as the Klitschko dominance finally came to an end.
