Murray beats Goffin to give Britain Davis cup
A nation had seen Andy Murray become the first man to win Olympic gold in men’s singles in over a century-and what’s more, in London.
The win was set up by a split with Belgium on Day 1 and then a Murray/Murray (Andy’s brother Jamie is a doubles specialist) victory on Day 2.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions to Britain’s Davis Cup win. Obviously to have won all of the singles matches I played this year is great.
Ward, a veteran of that first tie with Smith in Eastbourne, who had been lined up for the fifth rubber, was relieved to find his services weren’t required. Murray won in straights. He, too, was playing three rubbers, and had the backing of 90 per cent of the pounding arena in Ghent.
Digging in, Goffin fought off three set points to hold.
The victory sparked rapturous scenes amongst the British team and travelling support at the Flanders Expo as they celebrated a moment the country has been awaiting for 79 years when Fred Perry won the deciding rubber to beat Australia at Wimbledon. A huge key for Murray in the set was Goffin only landing 45 percent of his first serves.
“It’s just terrific for Andy, [brother] Jamie, captain Leon Smith, the rest of the team, and all the people who have contributed”, said Hutchins, whose 1978 team lost their final to John McEnroe’s United States on a Californian hard court. “We can just give everything and have no regrets”.
Murray has said that his job remains delivering success on court, and it is for others to take responsibility for spreading wider interest in the sport. This was special, this meant the world. A break at 3-3 brought the finishing line into sight. He made a forehand victor to hold. “He made it a very tough match”.
The world number 16 has never managed to win a set off Murray and three weeks ago at the Paris Masters he was spanked 6-1 6-0.
Murray’s only loss from two sets up came when he was 18, and he was not about to make this a second.
The Belgian appeared to get a glimmer of hope when he broke Murray’s serve for the first time for a 2-0 lead in the third set.
“Most of the top players are going right through to the end of the majors”. Great Britain was two games from reclaiming the Cup.
To chants of “David, David”, Murray tried to compose himself-and he had already been called for a time violation despite the constant hold-ups from crowd noise-but went 0-30 down. “I think I proved that I can have a really high level and I will try to still improve my game, my serve and be more aggressive for 2016”. He saved two break points to start the third then broke for the first time all day when Murray slapped a forehand into net. The win marks the first victory in the event for the British since 1936, but perhaps it also highlights the need for the Davis Cup, as a team competition, to better test the depth of a country’s tennis talent.
One of the Murray brothers’ finest weekends.
While Murray’s future in the Davis Cup is clouded by other commitments, captain Leon Smith is yet to negotiate an extension to his deal with the Lawn Tennis Association.
ANDY Murray revealed he stayed up late on Saturday night to watch the boxing before landing the knockout blow which landed Britain the Davis Cup final.
