Andy Murray and team mates hailed for historic Davis Cup victory
Andy Murray said winning the Davis Cup was more emotional than winning Wimbledon after he guided Great Britain to the team trophy for the first time since 1936.
Manchester United were quick to claim Murray’s brother and doubles team-mate Jamie as one of their own, commenting on their official Twitter feed: “Congratulations to the Great Britain team, including £mufc fan @Jamie-Murray, on winning the @DavisCup for the first time since 1936!”
Fittingly for a player who has nearly single-handedly guided his country to a 10th title, the indefatigable Murray ended Goffin’s inspired resistance with a moment of sheer brilliance few could conjure to complete a 6-3 7-5 6-3 victory.
The 28-year-old Scot became the first man to win three live rubbers in a Davis Cup final since American Pete Sampras in 1995, taking his record in this year’s competition to 11-0.
Two-time grand slam champion Murray’s performance was particularly impressive in a hostile atmosphere and he was full value for a historic victory that will rank among his greatest achievements.
“It’s obviously an wonderful feeling”, he said.
British newspapers declared Andy Murray was on top of the world as they ecstatically hailed Great Britain’s Davis Cup victory.
Andy took a rare night off to celebrate, saying: “I imagine everyone will be on fire tonight”. Britain’s number one Andy Murray gained the crucial third point in a pulsating match against his Belgian counterpart David Goffin. Things got better too, Goffin breaking Murray for the first time in the match when the British star netted a forehand. The Davis Cup can’t quite be won by one player, however if an elite player like Murray is playing his best then, we have to admit, it barely takes another.
“I was in bed probably by 11pm but, yeah, I managed to find a stream of the boxing online and I watched it”, he said. But, after another loss to Federer, his dignified speech, with his voice cracking as he tried to hold back the tears, did much to change opinions.
Actor Kevin Spacey: Congrats Andy Murray on Davis Cup win! The Davis Cup may be tennis’ most significant-and really its only-team competition, but it was a one-man show from start to finish in 2015.
Murray channelled his disappointment in fine fashion though, playing a superb next game to break straight back. “This win gives a massive boost to British Tennis and I hope the LTA can capitalise on it and bring even more people into the sport”.
But Murray would get a vital break in the seventh game, facing triple break point Goffin hits long, giving the world number two an opening.
“A lot of disappointment, but no regrets”, Goffin said.
Murray fell to the ground in celebration and was swiftly mobbed by his teammates, but in a great display of sportsmanship shook them off to jog to the Belgian bench and shake hands with Goffin, Belgian captain Johan van Herck and the rest of the Belgian squad.
