Van Gaal Reacts To Leicester Draw; Jamie Vardy’s EPL Goal Record
In the process he became the first player to score in 11 consecutive Premier League matches – breaking the previous record held by Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Jamie Vardy’s goal at the King Power Stadium on Saturday night not only gave Leicester the lead against the might of Manchester United, but etched his name into the history books.
All-time third highest goal scorer for England was quite highly impressed by Leicester’s display and also praised Jamie Vardy after he broke the 12-year-old record. Vardy’s goal came on a counter-attack from a United corner and he added: “We have a lot of pace in the team and counter-attacking is a big advantage for us”.
“We’re a bit disappointed we conceded the goal bang on half-time but overall the point was a fair result”.
James McArthur (14), Yannick Bolasie (17) and Wilfried Zaha (41) scored before the break to set the Eagles on their way to only a second win in six league games.
Vardy is Leicester’s No 1, but his success begs the question: who is the record holder at your Premier League club?
Bastian Schweinsteiger levelled in first-half injury time and Van Gaal insisted he was pleased with United’s efforts, explaining they did not train following Wednesday’s 0-0 Champions League draw with PSV. Smalling has been consistent all season and was United’s man of the match against Leicester once again.
“I hope this record keeps on for a long time and we are very proud about it. All his team-mates helped him to achieve it”.
Asked by former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel what he had been shouting to the crowd as he celebrated, Vardy smiled and said: “I don’t think I can repeat it, to be honest with you!” However, Leicester City are said to have stamped a £30 million price-tag over his head to ward-off interest from the likes of Chelsea FC and Manchester United. “I can say our organisation is bad but he is provoking that also”, he said after watching his side finish with 69 per cent possession and limiting the hosts to three shots on target.
According to Mirror, Vardy played through pain in the match after picking up a foot knock that prompted team doctors to strap him with an ice pack.
“Now I am thinking there are 11 points to go”, Ranieri said.
“Obviously it’s a record which has stood for quite some time so -literally every single one of the United players congratulated me at the end, so that’s credit to them”.
Vardy stole the attention but Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri admitted he had guessed Van Gaal would change his system to three at the back to cope with the rampant Foxes striker and Shinji Okazaki.
“If you can find some sort of hidden gems in local or non-League football, I think it would be a no-brainer to give them a chance”.
