Andy Murray, Jamie Murray put Britain on brink of Davis Cup title
Murray is set to play in next year’s first round against Japan in Birmingham, but if that is won he is far from assured of playing the quarter-final after Wimbledon, especially with fatherhood and the defence of his Olympic title looming a few weeks later.
Goffin has not won a set in two previous meetings with Murray and lost 6-1, 6-0 in the Paris Masters last month.
Murray, who ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a men’s Wimbledon champion in 2013, then sat on the British team’s bench, his face hidden behind a Union Jack flag.
“I just can’t believe we did it”, said Murray after the match. “Nothing may ever top this, it’s definitely one of the highlights of all of our careers”.
Smith said: “The most important thing is to enjoy this, it’s been an very bad long time since Britain has won it so we should make sure we spend time together as a team and talk about all our stories”.
Other players have contributed, not least James Ward, Dan Evans and a number of doubles players in helping Britain get back to the World Group, while Ward and Jamie Murray, alongside his brother in doubles, have also posted wins this year.
It’s also good that the attention was trained on Andy Murray more than his pregnant wife Kim Sears after his Davis Cup victory.
McEnroe had a 12-0 record in 1982 and Michael Stich had 11 wins in 1993. Goffin secured Belgium its only point of the finals when he took down Kyle Edmund in five sets in the first singles match. “Sealing victory in three sets, he fell to the floor sobbing as he embraced his teammates and was lifted aloft in celebration while fans lined up to take selfies with the player”. Goffin saved set points on his own serve but was unable to prevent the world number two from serving for the set.
A double-fault by Jamie Murray gave the Belgians their third break point and they used it when Goffin fired a volley victor for a 2-1 lead in the second. Murray hit a service victor and an ace to come out unscathed despite facing a break point in the next game. The Belgian put up more of a fight this time round but never really threatened an upset. “It will definitely give me a boost going into the off season”.
“Congratulations to the GB Tennis Team for winning the Davis Cup for the first time since 1936 #DavisCupFinal”, he said.
“You have to say he was the better player and he deserved to win”.
AGED just ten, he led a Scotland team to a thrilling win over their English rivals in a battle of the Auld Enemy at Craiglockhart Tennis Centre.
But his preparation wasn’t great, having stayed up late to watch Tyson Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko to win the world heavyweight crown.
Reflecting on his performance which brought about the 6-3 7-5 6-3 win, Murray added: “I was pumped the whole match, right from the beginning right through to the end”.
