India will fulfil responsibilities on climate: Modi to Obama

The prime minister, who landed here on Sunday, also held bilateral talks with Presidents Hollande and Obama, as also Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, besides an unexpected brief meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
“A group for harnessing the power of sun, the Int’l Solar Alliance brings together nations between Tropics of Cancer & Capricorn”, he added.
“This day is the sunrise of new hope – not just for clean energy, but for villages and homes still in darkness; and for our mornings and evenings filled with a clear view of the glory of the sun”, he said of the launch of the initiative supported by over 100 countries.
The Prime Minister also mentioned India’s ambitious target of producing 175 GW of renewable energy.
Modi will also deliver a speech on India’s stand on the issue and also showcase India’s harmony with nature, environment and commitment to mitigate climate change. The discussion paper suggests that much more work has to be done, Das said, adding further that the OECD report needs to establish more credible, accurate, and verifiable numbers on the true size of the mobilization of climate change finance commitments and flows from developed to developing countries.
“India’s progress is our destiny and the right of our people”.
India has already submitted for the consideration of the conference, what is called the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions sought from the 196 member states of the convention, offering to cut its emission intensity by 33-35 percent by 2030.
“Principle of common but differentiated responsibilities should be the bedrock of our collective enterprise”.
He stated that advanced countries need to leave enough carbon space for developing countries to grow.
