Murray the Hero at Britain Wins Davis Cup
By beating David Goffin 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday, Murray secured Britain’s 3-1 victory over Belgium in the Davis Cup final and ended a drought for the country dating back to 1936.
Murray sank to his knees and rolled in the clay of the Flanders Expo after his successful topspin lob sealed a straight-sets defeat of David Goffin and Britain’s 3-1 win over Belgium.
“It feels awesome. I never thought WE would have the opportunity to do this”.
“I$3 probably haven’t been as emotional as that after a match that I’ve won”, Murray said when asked to put the win in context.
“I just wanted to try and win that final point”. I did not know that would ever be possible. She gets so many people involved, but she can’t keep doing it on her own. I think that’s where the issue is a little bit.
“Yeah, Leon and his team are responsible for getting us to play at that level so consistently and deserve a lot of credit for that”.
Murray was forced to play some of his best tennis against a risky opponent who was roared on by a soccer-style crowd inside the claustrophobic arena. “When he won the Olympics in 2012 and then Wimbledon in 2013, there was a terrific spike in enthusiasm for British tennis, and I just hope we get one now”.
Murray said the late finish to the season due to the Davis Cup means he will only have around 10 days off before starting training for next year, but he is planning to take February off with the birth of his first child with wife Kim due.
Murray joins his fellow “big four” rivals Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in having won the Davis Cup and it is an achievement he will treasure alongside his grand slam titles and Olympic gold medal.
Belgian captain Johan van Herck said that his team had done all they could but that Murray had won the Davis Cup nearly single-handedly.
The last British brothers to play together in a Davis Cup final were Laurence and Reggie Doherty, who clinched victory for Britain against Belgium in 1904.
His two singles wins also made him only the third man to complete a flawless eight game run of victories in a calendar year, along with John McEnroe and Mats Wilander. I will try to do that in Australia. He will be the first to say that it is a team thing but what he has done is astonishing. “All of us understand this will be one of the best moments in our careers regardless of what anyone goes on to achieve after this”.
“Hopefully we can win it again next year”, he said, giving very little away.
