Amy Schumer and Serena Williams Strip Down!
Playboy and the Pirelli Calendar had one thing in common (nudity), and as of the 2016 edition of the calendar, they still do (no nudity).
Since launching in 1964, the famous Pirelli calendar has been known to feature the world’s top models, mostly nude, captured by renowned photographers. But the annual Pirelli calendar has signalled a break with its history by replacing nude images of supermodels with a feminist collection depicting “women of achievement”, photographed by Annie Leibovitz. When Pirelli approached me, they said they wanted to make a departure from the past. “I wanted to the pictures to show the women as they are, with no pretense”. I thought that the women should look strong but natural and I chose to keep it a very simple exercise of shooting in the studio. It’s become a collector’s item, with people buying editions at auction and even paying $2,000 for the sold-out collector’s edition 50th anniversary book. Luckily, we’ve got a preview of the incredible photos to share with you, here..
Featuring Serena Williams and comedy queen Amy Schumer, the calendar turns away from the usual sexualised women and instead focuses on confidence and intelligence. “She was willing to play that role”.
The Trainwreck star captioned the photo, in which she’s only wearing a pair of heels and panties, with all the comments she knows she will get.
When asked in Vogue about how next year’s new calendar and winning formula of 50 years would go down, Patti Smith said: “I have no idea what the average recipient would think, but I think that they should appreciate a bold move”.
