Police officer shot, killed during call; suspect charged

31, was captured around 3:15 a.m. while walking near a power plant outside New Florence, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Police confirmed Shetler was suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder sustained during his initial encounter with law enforcement.

Shetler hasn’t yet been charged with a crime, but Limani said he expected a warrant to be obtained Sunday for his arrest.

Shetler’s girlfriend didn’t respond to a message left on her home phone Monday, but Limani dismissed comments she made to reporters over the weekend that Reed fired at Shetler as he ran away, and was only then shot by Shetler.

Reed, a police officer for 25 years, had worked part-time in New Florence for five years.

“Thoughts and prayers are with family and colleagues of St. Clair Township Officer Lloyd Reed who was killed in the line of duty last night”, the governor said in a statement.

Another officer also shot at Shetler, who ran away after allegedly shooting Reed and was found by police hours later.

A suspect was spotted running away from the scene, and state police have been called to the area.

“He was very dedicated, just your average Joe kind of guy, very down to Earth and hardworking”, Held said.

Police are asking residents to secure their homes.

“I heard his girlfriend saying, ‘breathe, ‘” Kenley, 46, said.

Police said that Shetler had previously had incidents that involved police, but nothing that approached the current situation.
