Woman Killed In Terror Drill Panic At Uni
The university said only rubber bullets were used during the drill.
A university staff member died when a terrorism drill in Kenyan capital Nairobi sparked panic Monday, according to officials.
“Two of them are in critical condition, 14 are stable, they mostly sustained fractures, others have head injuries”, he said.
Some students and one professor jumped from a four-story building and got injured as they thought it was a terror attack.
Reports indicate that some students jumped from the fourth floor of their classrooms while others took to the nearest river in search of an escape route.
In a statement, the university said that prior training had been provided to teams of security marshals, comprising students and staff.
In a statement, the university said the exercise on campus was “aimed at testing the preparedness of the university community and emergency team in the event of an attack“.
Nairobi West Hospital confirmed 20 students had been injured in a stampede. “The university has assured all the students, parents and stakeholders that the situation is under control and normal operations have resumed”.
Nairobi has been on heightened alert after bomb and gun attacks by Somali al Shabaab militants such as the storming of Garissa University near the Somali border in April in which 147 people were killed and the 2013 Westgate mall attack in Nairobi when 67 were killed.
A statement from the university said it has launched an “intensive assessment” of “key lessons learnt”.
Pictures have emerged on Twitter showing terrified students spilling out of windows and seeking refuge on the side of the uni. “A terror attack carried out by Strathmore University upon it’s students”, wrote another.
