Justin Fuente cashes in with Virginia Tech
After all, moving on from a coach, whether through a firing or resignation, is the easy part. It will also reportedly keep beloved defensive coordinator Bud Foster and associate head coach Shane Beamer on staff in Blacksburg. Multiple reports indicate that Virginia Tech will hire Memphis’ Justin Fuente to replacing the retiring Beamer, hitting a home run before the Cavaliers even made an official decision on London.
Clearly, there are some elements of London’s style that the Cavaliers would welcome in their new coach. Memphis has scored an average of 40.8 points per game behind junior quarterback Paxton Lynch, a Unitas Award finalist, which recognizes the top fourth-year quarterback in the country.
Virginia Tech continued its bowl streak with a win on Saturday against Virginia.
Another area where the game was won was at the free throw line.
Virginia Tech will introduce Fuente at a news conference Monday. The Cyclones finished second to last in the conference standings, and it will likely take time for Campbell to turn this program around, as he will need to bring in his own recruits.
Clearly, Babcock and the VT brass believe, a Fuente offense and a Foster defense are what the Hokies need to catch Clemson and Florida State. Compensation owed to London and any assistant coaches not retained by the next head coach will be funded from athletics department funds.
“This is one of the finest head coaches who built this program from basically nowhere in 2012, so I would imagine it’s a very appealing opportunity”, Bowen said.
“I understand that we are graded by wins and losses, but you’re so much more than that”. Littlepage met with London this morning to discuss the future of the Virginia football program. “I am confident that we will continue to build this football program to extraordinary levels of competitive excellence”. He said he’s looking forward to raising his three daughters here. Fuente will be at the bowl game, but not on the field. And with the coaching carousel being the busiest and most wide-open it’s been in years, there are more than enough vacancies for which Foster could interview (and probably get) if he wanted.
Before the start of the 2015 regular season, Memphis head coach Justin Fuente was a bit of a mystery to the majority of the casual college football fan base. It’s the joining of two great minds on either side of the ball.
