New England Patriots lose first game of season against Denver Broncos
Down 24-21 with just second left, Brady led the Patriots offense down the field and into field goal range.
None of it bothered Brock Osweiler.
Coming off Sunday night’s 30-24 overtime loss to the Broncos in Denver, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady discussed the the team’s first loss with Dennis, Callahan & Minihane on WEEI.
It all reminded him of his youth in Kalispell, Montana, where misfires in the backyard ended up in snowbanks “and you’d have to dust off all the snow”, Osweiler said. “You can’t cover a guy in the National Football League anymore”.
“But, yeah, it was fun”.
Playing without their two top receivers, and then without tight end Rob Gronkowski in overtime, the Patriots blew a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter then squandered a game-saving drive by Tom Brady. “I have no idea”, Brady said.
“They just feel like there’s a push off. It’s obviously different than what I saw, because I’m looking at it too, but they’re the ones with the flags and they throw it. You hate to see it come down to stuff like that, but there were a lot of plays last night that just didn’t necessarily end up the way we would have hoped and there were a lot of things that we could have done better”. When you go low that’s what happens.
“I think if you sit there and dwell on it, it might be overwhelming, but we can’t do that”, Chandler said.
They’re a mess, with questions now being raised about whether or not Chip Kelly has lost his team and players, with some of those players now seemingly more focused on trying to get through this season with the thought Kelly might not be there than they are about making it to the postseason in a bad division.
Coach Bill Belichick had no postgame update on Gronkowski’s fourth-quarter injury, after which he was was carted from the field.
The Broncos (9-2) won it when C.J. Anderson bounced a run outside and raced 48 yards down Denver’s jubilant sideline with 12:32 left in overtime after its top-ranked defense forced a three-and-out thanks to a big sack by Von Miller and a huge hit by Shane Ray.
“We’ve got a long way to go but this is a good one”, Anderson said.
“I’m not surprised at all”, said receiver Bubba Caldwell, who caught the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. Mark Sanchez completed 19 of 27 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Win or lose, Allen should get at least five game balls for the night. The kick came amid snow flurries and was reminiscent of the field goal Adam Vinatieri made for the Patriots in a snowy 2001 playoff victory against the Oakland Raiders. The Patriots could still score, but if a defense stopped the run and limited Gronk, the Patriots could be beaten.
Redskins 20, Giants 14: In Landover, Maryland, Kirk Cousins threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson and scored off a quarterback sneak. The Steelers (6-5) had a two-game win streak end. In the receiving end, Rob Gronkowski had 88 yards and one touchdown in six receptions while Brandon Bolden added 84 yards and one touchdown in four catches.
