Eskimos rally to 26-20 Grey Cup victory over Redblacks
The sold out crowd of 36,634 witnessed the Edmonton Eskimos defeat the Ottawa Redblacks 26-20 for their 14th Grey Cup Sunday evening. “They’re a very good football team and they deserved to win tonight”.
The CFL always seems to put on a top-notch Grey Cup. “It was an unbelievable week”. We’ll pull positives out of it tomorrow. “We’re going to soak this all up”.
The Grey Cup continues to be one of Canada’s most popular sporting events, drawing hundreds of thousands of fans from across our great country each year. There are reports the Saskatchewan Roughriders are offering Jones more money and a chance to be coach and GM.
If he were to leave, it could create a massive void with the Eskimos, especially if some or all of Jones’ hand-picked assistants, and perhaps some free-agent players, followed him to Regina.
“I had been in the league for half a season before 2011 and when we got to the Grey Cup and win it you just kind of assume that’s just how it is, it’s not hard to get there”, Reilly said.
Redblacks’ Henry Burris completed seven of eight passes on those two drives for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Reilly threw for 352 yards and three TDs in a 27-16 victory and the Eskimos never looked back, winning its final 10 games culminating with the Grey Cup title.
The Eskimos won the Canadian Football League title for the first time since 2005.
The catch was negated, and the Eskimos held on to win.
It wasn’t until Edmonton challenged the non-call that a penalty was assessed. It was a non-call on the field, but that doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen. There would have been a massive controversy.
As a Grey Cup champion head coach with one year remaining on his Eskimos contract, Jones wields considerable leverage at the moment. Yet there was Reynolds on Saturday night, making his way around the Riderville social, mingling with the passionate fans of his football club.
But the 2015 campaign was a tale of two seasons for the Eskimos.
They were greeted by green and gold clad fans, cheering, blowing horns and singing the team’s fight song.
The Redblacks found themselves up 13-0 before the Edmonton offence had taken the field, thanks to an opening TD drive and a fumble recovery on the ensuing kickoff that led to another score.
“At the end of the day, they (the officials) made the calls and that’s the way it ended”, said defensive back Jovon Johnson. Sportsnet reported on the weekend Williams will be re-signing with the RedBlacks soon.
Ever since 5.4 million viewers watched the 100th Grey Cup in 2012, audiences for the annual championship have been in decline.
