Iowa 84, No. 20 Wichita State 61
– The University of Iowa men’s basketball team shot 53.8 percent from the floor and had four players finish in double figures in cruising to an 84-61 victory over No. 20 Wichita State on Sunday morning at the Advocare Invitational. The Shockers have been the Shockees in three games this season, losing to USC, Alabama and Tulsa, and while that is perfectly acceptable for a football team, those are bad basketball losses.
“We learned this week what we need to do to win”, said senior Mike Gesell.
“I was just very, very proud of the competitive sprit … to withstand a run from a top-20 team in the country”. His layup gave the Hawkeyes a 38-16 advantage late in the half.
Hale finished with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Justin Coleman had a good shooting night, leading the team with 10 points.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLORIDA–“Can we go home yet?” “We did a great job on the glass”.
Senior forward Jarrod Uthoff led Iowa with 22 points. Boatwright also had five rebounds, three steals and a block in the game. Nikola Jovanovic added 20 points and 12 rebounds, Elijah Stewart scored 20 points and Julian Jacobs had 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Trojans (2-0). After Wichita State missed a shot, Grady started racing down the floor before falling face-first onto the floor.
“We know he’s going to make a full recovery”, said teammate Eric Hamilton, who received a text from Grady before the game. The Hawkeyes tore off a 15-2 run, capped by a three-pointer by freshman forward Nicholas Baer.
Baker got his first points on a 3 to make it 31-16 with 5 minutes left in the opening half. Wichita State says tests on injured forward Anton Grady show no signs of spinal cord trauma stemming from a collision in a game Friday that left him motionless on the court.
“(This week), we had two great comebacks and learned why we got behind”, said McCaffery. “I think our team took a little step today in that we didn’t let it affect us on the defensive end”.
Iowa (4-2) took control with a 15-2 run early in the game and started the second half with an 11-0 run.
Iowa stretched the advantage to as many as 22 points in the first half before a shot by Wichita State’s Ty Taylor II from a few feet behind midcourt swished at the buzzer.
Arizona guards Kadeem Allen and Allonzo Trier each scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack as the 11th-ranked Wildcats won the third-place game of the Wooden Legacy tournament in Anaheim, Calif. Because these 12 noon games, we haven’t really executed and had the mental and the physical toughness, in the second half especially.
